Hmmm..what to say about this book. I'm pleased that the author came at the fantasy from a whole new angle of calling out that supernatural folk can be neurotic, too! Most all other urban fantasies the supernatural are either with the hero, or they're not. Here we are presented with a whole slew of folk who just ARE. They live, love, shop, go to the dr - even psych docs, and get knocked up. A very very refreshing change. The author did a great job of putting me in Nat's head. I got it. I understood why she was the way she was, and why she wasn't a kick butt take names kind of gal. And I lIKED it, how weird is that? I'm rooting for her growth. I dont necessarily want her to become Kate Daniels, but I do want her to feel more empowered and in control.
The love triangle was ok, but I'm clearly going to be in the Nick camp. Thorn had his shot, and has done nothing to indicate he deserves another. She needs to move on. Hopefully in the next book she'll figure that out.
The writing was not weak, by any means. Good plot, a little of Harry Dresden meets Stephanie Plum. However, definitely more skill needs to be developed to be able to mature and sustain this series. That said I will add the next to my wish list so I'll know when it's available. It's been a long time since I've done that. I'm looking forward to seeing if this author can hit a home run. I think she can!

I don’t usually write reviews but this series I felt compelled. I always love the escape of reading this genre but what really moved me was the very real battles that many of us mortals face with mental illness. To present it in those we often look at as “perfect” and “supernatural “ was a boon of comfort to me. An escape into a magical perfect world is sometimes fun but I found this way more cathartic. Instead of escaping reality I confronted it but with a little supernatural help. Thank you for recognizing the hidden illnesses out there and the shame often associated with it. I wish I had a wizard some days for sure but I’m not alone and apparently even the fantastical struggle. Thank you a very relatable and educational approach to such a fun genre.
I didn't know what to think when I began this story about a werewolf with OCD. Natalya is a long-time sufferer. Her OCD is bad enough that she has been thrown out of her werewolf pack because it makes her a weak link. She is surviving working at an antique store and collecting her Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanzaa ornaments and decorations. When her old boyfriend Thorn comes back to town the pressure gets greater. He is the son of the alpha who kicked her out of the pack and he is supposed to marry a girl from one of the high status families in the pack. But he can't stay away from her.
When the Long Island pack tries to move in and take over Nat's former pack things get even worse. The alpha of that pack has targeted Nat for reasons unknown to her. She feels isolated and alone. But she has decided to return to therapy to see if she can get her "collecting" under control. There she meets Nick who is a White Wizard who has the same sort of OCD she has. Nick comes to her rescue a few times when she is threatened. Nat also makes a friend in Quentin who is a necromancer who works as a janitor at the same antique store where Nat works. Their first - and only - date was funny in a creepy way.
Nat is also supported when her best friend Aggie comes to visit. Aggie is running away from her father and an arranged marriage. She is a high status werewolf who has an eating disorder. She and Nat became friends when both were sent to a camp for troubled werewolves.
This was an entertaining and unusual urban fantasy story. I really came to like Nat and look forward to reading the sequel to this book. I am eager to see how the relationship with Thorn and with Nick work out.
I have to give ithis a 4 Star (probable a bit more) reading experience. The pace of the book was really good and I had no problems staying interested in all the crazy and bad luck events that seems to pile up on the main character Natayla (an outcast werewolf). Written entirely from her POV, I found I liked that more than I thought I would. I was able to feel her struggles with OCD (compulsive cleanliness and hoarder of xmas ornaments), her lack of self confidence and low self-esteem, not just for being 'different' but as an outsider kicked out of her pack. At times her submissiveness and weakness bothered me but I understood where she was coming from being picked on for OCD, seen as the weak link by her old pack gaining her no respect, and being a rogue loner wolf. Luckily, Natalya had a best friend Aggie with an eating disorder, who stood by her side through thick and thin. She also made some unexpected friends (like her band of misfits) when she goes to group therapy to work on moving forward and changing her life. There she meets Nick, the white wizard, who seems to understand her and is there for her when she least expects it. While the story takes place in suburbia NJ and NYC, the world of supernaturals are all mixed species. From werewolfs, witches, goblins, nymphs, warlocks, wizards and zombies. Surprisingly, no vampires. To add to all the complexities, Natayla is still heartbroken over her ex Thorn comes back in town to take over as alpha and fight off the rival pack who has targeted Natalya. This puts her life in constant danger so he wants to protect her and still cares for her but can't be with her due to his duties to the pack. Then, there's Natalya's family who kinda shuns her (some more than others) for getting kicked out though we don't find out why until 3/4 in the book. While there is some action, suspense, a bit of humor, and romantic tension, what I liked most was her growth in this book. Not by leaps and bounds but enough to be realistic in her struggle with OCD and trying to gain acceptance back into her family and pack. Natayla was the underdog I wanted to cheer for. There was a lot going on but I was able to follow it all nicely. This is, IMO, lighter UF with no HEA and her story continues in book 2, Kept, out in November. Since I have grown to care for the heroine, I know I will be buying it. This book was an unexpected, pleasant surprise and worth the money I paid ).
